I have a bachelor's degree in social work and have been practicing for three years. Will this help or harm my chances of finding a position teaching in Japan?

Hi Vanessa,

To answer your question, your major doesn't matter much. Well not for finding entry level work. I have known many teachers who majored in music, psychology, art etc. and they found work without a problem.

When you start looking for higher paying jobs then TEFL certification and experience play a big role. But hey, the stakes are bigger and so the employer can be pickier.

In fact, I would go as far as to say a hiring manager would look quite fondly at your resume as a BSW degree indicates that you have the abilities to cope with change which is an essential skill in teaching. I was a hiring manager. If I saw your resume it would hit the top of my list in a second!

If you are a little bit stressed or not so confident about jumping up in front of a class without experience in teaching methodology etc. grab yourself an Online TEFL course. But your experience in social work will by no means harm your chances of finding work teaching in Japan.

Best regards,

John
