Working Holiday Visa and Jobs in Japan

by Abbie
(Australia)

I just finished college in Australia and I don't have a bachelors degree or teaching experience. I've looked on many websites but I've found that all positions require a bachelors degree. How can I find somewhere that doesn't require this?

Hi Abbie,

Actually Japanese immigration DOES NOT mandate a 4 year degree to issue a working holiday visa or WHV. So that does not present a problem unless you are over 30 years of age.

But what you need to keep in mind is that many employers are reluctant to hire a teacher with a WHV because it usually means they don't have a degree and since a WHV is only good for 1 year you need to find someone who will hire you knowing this visa constriction exists.

So it makes finding a job in Japan more difficult than if you had a 4 year degree but there are many Australians who are working at English conversation schools throughout Japan so it can be done. It will take a bit more effort on your part.

I would shoot for Tokyo as there are the greatest amount of schools there so it should make finding a job easier.

Hope this helps!
