TEFL certificate + Bachelors Degree

by Casey
(Minnesota )

I have a Bachelors degree in History and by the time I would go to Japan I will have a year of teaching experience through the Americorps. Would it be beneficial to get the On-Line TEFL before I go or would it not effect my job prospects?

4 year History Degree Plus TEFL?
by: John

Hi Casey,

I would say in general that you do not need the TEFL certificate -especially since you already have teaching experience. So in general it would have minimum impact on finding a job in Japan.

However there are certain circumstances that impact this decision. For example, are you fairly young and in good health? Are you looking for an entry level, ham and egg English job? Are you looking to get into a competitive city like Kyoto? Are you willing to teach children? And the list goes on.

If you just want a change of pace and just want to experience Japan then your university degree should cut it in terms of getting you your visa and job.

But getting sponsorship and a visa from your employer so that you can work comes first. This should be kept in mind.

You can just blast over to Japan on a landing permit but this will only give you 3 months to land a sponsor and visa or will be illegally residing.

Hope this helps
