School Sponsorship Without a Visa

by Jason
(New Zealand)

Hi there, I have been reading through your blog and I have a question about visas. If you don't have a degree however you want to get a job with a school in Japan, once you are there will the school sponsor you for a VISA or does that still require a degree? Thanks!

Hi Jason,
You can of course get a Japanese visa but it will be a tourist visa, also called a landing permit and it is only good for sightseeing and lasts 3 months.
Without a 4 year degree a company will not offer sponsorship to you. This is not their decision it is mandated by the government.

If you have a specialized skill and some years of experience doing it then there is a possibility that a company would offer you a visa. But this specialized skill is not a typical skill like a cashier. Something that any Japanese could do. It has to be well... specialized.

Examples of this are foreign cooking, architecture or civil engineering characteristic to foreign countries. In this case a 4 year degree is not necessary.

Hope this helps
