Finishing Up My Bachelors

by Kyle
(USA)

Hi. I'm finishing up my Bachelors and planning to teach in Japan. Out of all the certifications offered, I'd like to know which one is best and the timeline in which I should earn the certification before applying/leaving for Japan. Thank you

Finishing Up My Bachelors Now & Looking For a Job in Japan
by: John

Hi Kyle,

Okay so you are finishing up your degree. Good for you that's the big step to getting a ESL job in Japan.

Regarding your question of the time-line, you need to know that here in Japan the hiring of teachers is in high-gear already (written in January.) So if you choose a course and want to get in through the short spring hiring window you should go for a short course. About 60 hours on-line should do fine. Most students can get it done pretty fast.

If you have a bit more time then definitely go for Mytefl's 120 Hour Online Course Discounted 30% off the regular price.
We have partnered with MyTEFL and you can get an additional 5% off if you use our coupon code alljapan35. It will save $50 or so. (I don't know how tight your time line is.) Now, this is if you want to travel to Japan on a tourist visa and then look for work.

Also i-to-i Online TEFL courses are widely recognized and affordable.

But if you have a lot of time until you leave you can try and skip the whole TEFL thing and try to get hired from the U.S. via. the big English schools like Nova, Aeon, Gaba, Amity, etc. They will take care of your sponsorship, visa, housing etc.

It all depends on how much time you have as to how you should go. So if you are tight on time grab some teaching certification, knock out the course and get on a plane. If you have time start applying to the big schools. You should know that many of the big schools don't mandate qualification but it gives you an edge. But you can get hired by them without certification.

Hope this helps and good luck to you
